Airlines are pulling tickets in Russian // Deputies demand to translate transportation documents

The deputies are asking the Ministry of Transport to oblige air carriers to print tickets in Russian – they allegedly receive “numerous complaints” about English terms that confuse passengers. Carriers say that it is impossible to set up printing in Cyrillic in Saber and Amadeus booking systems, although this will become possible when switching to domestic counterparts. However, not all market participants are ready to abandon international standards and assure that they have not received complaints about language problems.

According to Kommersant, the Ministry of Transport received an appeal from State Duma deputy Sergei Kotkin about citizens” for e-tickets and boarding passes on domestic flights, where “all important information is in English”. The deputy’s request dated September 26 (Kommersant has it) states that “this circumstance creates difficulties for citizens who do not speak English.” The deputy asks the Ministry of Transport to oblige carriers to provide information in Russian on tickets and boarding passes. To the letter, Mr. Kotkin attached copies of Aeroflot’s own electronic tickets for 2022, in which the only inscription in Russian: “Happy journey.”

The deputy assured Kommersant that he knew “a large number of examples “, when transportation documents are not issued in Russian, and this “provokes difficulties, especially at large airports.” The Ministry of Transport asked the aviators to prepare feedback on the issue by October 7, Kommersant sent a request to the ministry.

Aeroflot did not respond to the request, but Kommersant has ticket samples, where in Russian and in English. At the same time, it is technically impossible to create an itinerary receipt and boarding passes in Russian in the Saber and Amadeus international booking systems, since there is no Cyrillic alphabet, Red Wings clarifies. The carrier itself issues its boarding and route passes in Russian, since it works in the domestic Leonardo system, where Aeroflot is due to switch from November 1. At the same time, Red Wings and Smartavia clarified that the airports themselves are responsible for preparing the layout of the boarding pass at airports. tickets. Ural Airlines, which release all documentation in English, says that “no one had any problems with the translation.” “Data on the ticket number (13 Arabic numerals), reservation number (6 letters and numbers, the translation of which will lead to the loss of data on the reservation), departure time (also in Arabic numerals) do not need to be duplicated,” the company emphasized.

According to Art. 105 of the Air Code on transportation documents, ticket forms and baggage checks are established by the Ministry of Transport. The federal aviation regulations (FAP-82) only state that documents are issued by a carrier or an authorized agent, language requirements are not specified.

“Changes in the layout require time and certain costs from the airline,” noted Smartavia, where they described the deputy’s idea as “very strange”. One of the airlines added that the complete rejection of English-language definitions (for example, departure and arrival) and abbreviations (airport and carrier codes according to IATA) “does not make sense from the point of view of user convenience and further distances the Russian Federation from the international air transportation market.”

There is no rational need for this, confirms the head of the All-Russian Association of Passengers Ilya Zotov. Departure time is indicated by international standards, separated by a colon, and it is “intuitive, just like the date of departure.” In Russian cities, where “at best” there is one airport, it is difficult to confuse the place of departure, the expert adds.

The only possible discrepancy concerns, for example, the gate / exit (D25), which theoretically can be confused on the ticket with chair number (25D). But often airlines do not indicate boarding gates at all, Mr. Zotov clarifies. “It is necessary to accustom passengers to the rule to check the relevance of the gate before boarding the information boards,” he believes. The rejection of the international character system, the expert believes, would be “extremely harmful” both for the passengers themselves, who will no longer navigate international tickets, and for the aviation industry, which will have to solve “artificial bureaucratic difficulties.”
