    China Provides Humanitarian Aid to Cuban Oil Storage Base Fire Accident

    Havana, August 15 The Red Cross Society of China provided US$150,000 of emergency humanitarian cash assistance to the Cuban Red Cross Society on the 15th at the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Trade and Investment. The aid is to support Cuba’s rescue and relief work for a fire accident at an oil storage base in Matanzas province.

    Chinese Ambassador to Cuba Ma Hui and Cuban Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment Deborah Rivas attended the ceremony and signed the handover certificate.

    Ma Hui said in his speech that China and Cuba share weal and woe, and the Chinese government and people feel the pain of the Cuban people. He believes that under the strong leadership of the Cuban Party and government, the Cuban people will be able to unite as one. Overcome difficulties and carry out reconstruction work.

    On behalf of the Cuban government and people, Rivas thanked the Red Cross Society of China for its assistance. She said that under the current complex situation, China‘s move is another manifestation of the solidarity and friendship between the two countries.

    Suzanne Lhovet, Vice President of the Cuban Red Cross Society, said at the ceremony that the Cuban Red Cross Society thanked the Red Cross Society of China for providing disaster relief equipment, ventilators, protective equipment and other humanitarian supplies on many occasions and cash aid, fighting side by side with the Cuban people.

    Cuba’s largest oil storage base located in the Matanzas Port Industrial Zone, Matanzas Province, has 8 oil storage tanks, one of which caught fire after being struck by lightning on the evening of the 5th, and the fire subsequently spread 2 firefighters were killed and 132 others injured. At present, search and rescue work at the scene of the accident is still ongoing.
