French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Washington on December 1. His trip was the first official visit by a French president to the United States in six years and the first state reception at the White House during Joe Biden’s tenure. Last night, a solemn reception was held at the White House in honor of the French leader and his wife, Brigitte Macron. It was attended by 330 guests.
US First Lady Jill Biden wore a black sparkly Oscar da la Renta dress, Brigitte Macron shone in an ivory Louis Vuitton high-neck dress.
Celebrities on the guest list included actresses Jennifer Garner, Ariana Debose and Julia Luz Dreyfus, French fashion designer Christian Louboutin, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, Apple CEO Tim Cook, presenter Stephen Colbert and singer John Legend with wife Chrissy Teigen.
U.S. First Lady Jill Biden said she learned how to be a housewife from her mother, who “made every dinner a special occasion,” even if they only ate fish fingers from the freezer.
The menu of the gala evening was not fish sticks, but American and French cuisine, including lobsters, pumpkin ravioli and various delicacies. On the tables were roses, the official flower of the American capital, and irises, the official flower of France.
“The design of this dinner was inspired by the common colors of our flags – red, white and blue – and our common values: freedom and democracy, equality and camaraderie,” said Joe Biden.
