Environmentalists accuse UK government of 'climate hypocrisy'

According to the Associated Press report on December 7, the British government approved the country’s first new coal mine in 30 years on the 7th, a move condemned by environmentalists. Environmentalists said the British government’s decision was a huge step back in the fight against climate change.

The UK government said the planned new coal mine in Cumbria “has little impact on climate change in general, Therefore, it is in line with the government’s policy objectives to address climate change.” Coal extracted from new mines – replacing imported coal – will be used to make steel rather than generate electricity.

Opponents say the mine would be a major blow to Britain’s world leadership in replacing fossil fuels with clean energy, the report said. This, they argue, will undermine global efforts to phase out coal and push the UK further away from its 2050 goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.

Doug Parr of Greenpeace UK said: “The UK government risks becoming a climate hypocritical superpower, not a climate leader. When we How can we expect other countries to control the extraction of fossil fuels when new coal mines are being developed here?”
