Erdogan promised to resolve the issue with Mir cards on September 23

The refusal of two Turkish banks Isbank and Denizbank to service the cards of the Russian payment system “Mir” will be discussed by the Turkish authorities at a high level. According to Reuters sources, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan will hold a meeting with senior officials on September 23.

In a conversation with reporters, the Turkish leader stressed that the launch of the Russian the payment system was “the most important thing” with the cards.

“It was a step between Russia and us. We are evaluating with relevant colleagues the steps we will take on this issue. Of course, we have an alternative, but this is a separate issue,” Erdogan said.

According to him, the problem lies in the US sanctions, which do not correspond to Turkish friendship and economic relations with Russia.

On September 20, Isbank and Denizbank stopped servicing Mir cards. They explained their decision by the danger of falling under anti-Russian sanctions from the United States and Great Britain.

The US Treasury said earlier that third-country banks entering into agreements with the National Payment Card System (NPCS) of Russia “risk supporting the efforts Moscow to circumvent sanctions. Washington has not yet imposed sanctions against the NSPK as such, but they have been imposed on the head of the operator of the Mir payment system, Vladimir Komlev. operations with the Mir system.

The head of the NSPK Komlev said that there was no “catastrophic” decrease in the volume of payments using Mir cards in Turkey, but the number of points where they accept Russian cards of this system has decreased.

The United States hopes that a growing number of banks in the world will refuse to work with the Russian payment system Mir, a high-ranking official of the United States administration said on September 20.

“Disconnecting from Mir” is one of the best ways to protect a bank from the risk of sanctions that comes from doing business with Russia. We expect more banks to turn off Mir as they don’t want to risk being on the wrong side when it comes to coalition sanctions.”
