Tehran, Sept. 21, title: Talk about the “US untrustworthy” in the eyes of Iranians

Iran President Leahy made it clear in an interview with the American media recently: “We cannot trust the United States.” This sentence is not only his personal opinion, but also the consensus of Iranian society. From a government spokesman to an ordinary librarian, Iranian society today widely believes that “the United States cannot be trusted.”

The formation of this social consensus is closely related to the perfidy and arrogance of the United States on the issue of the comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue. In July 2015, after 10 years of arduous negotiations, Iran reached a nuclear deal with the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany. However, in 2018, despite the opposition of the international community, the United States unilaterally withdrew from the Iran nuclear agreement, and once again held high the stick of sanctions to “maximize pressure” on Iran.

The United States arbitrarily broke the treaty and imposed indiscriminate sanctions on Iran’s development has done great harm. After the Iran nuclear deal was reached, the U.S. lifted sanctions on Iran, and Iran’s average daily oil exports reached 2.5 million barrels at one point, and its economic growth rate reached a record 13.6%. However, after the United States unilaterally broke the contract and reimposed sanctions, Iran’s oil exports plummeted to only 100,000 barrels per day, and the economy shrank sharply for successive years.

Affected by US sanctions, the Iranian rial has depreciated significantly in just a few years. Before the reimposition of sanctions, more than 30,000 riyals could be exchanged for one dollar, but now it takes 300,000 rials to exchange for one dollar. The import and production costs of Iranian goods have increased significantly, and the shortage of material supply has led to soaring prices and hardships for people’s livelihood. Since 2018, overall prices in Iran have risen by about 85%, and food prices have doubled. Many Iranian families are struggling to make ends meet. During the Chinese New Year, many Iranian children cannot wear new clothes, and many housewives have to think for a long time to buy a piece of meat.

The pain of people’s livelihood has made Iranians generally pay attention to the Iran nuclear negotiation and look forward to the early lifting of sanctions. However, the indirect negotiation between Iran and the United States on the resumption of the implementation of the Iran nuclear agreement has been going on for nearly a year and a half, with ups and downs in the middle, and no result has been reached so far. The current U.S. government says one thing and does another. Although it has verbally stated that it is willing to return to the Iran nuclear deal, it has inherited the previous government’s policy of “maximum pressure” toward Iran. Sanctions.

The current U.S. administration’s words and deeds are inconsistent, deepening the Iranian society’s perception that “the United States cannot be trusted”. If the Americans want a deal, “why are they imposing new sanctions on Iran during the negotiation process?” Leahy said, with the United States backtracking and bad records, Iran is now extra cautious in negotiating. The Iranian side has repeatedly asked the US side to make guarantees that it will not default again. Mohammad Marandi, an adviser to the Iranian negotiating team, made it clear that the Iranian side believes that corresponding clauses should be set, and if the United States defaults again, it must pay a price.

The Iranian society believes that “the United States is not credible”, which is a silhouette of the increasingly bankrupt international reputation of the United States. Multiple polls show that the U.S.’s global influence is generally declining. In order to safeguard its hegemony and private interests, the United States has repeatedly broken its contracts and “withdrew from the group”, provoking conflict and confrontation. Although the United States often uses the guise of so-called “democracy” and “human rights”, it is hard to hide the evil consequences of its perverse actions on other countries and even the entire international community.
