Flight Hijacked starring Idris Elba premieres on Apple TV+

An aircraft of the British airline Kingdom Airlines takes off from Dubai to London. After two hours in the air, he is captured by armed criminals who cut off the passengers’ connection to the ground and threaten to start killing people if their demands are not met. While the government and intelligence agencies are looking for solutions to the situation below, one of the passengers on board is trying to prevent bloodshed – first-class business negotiator Sam Nelson (Idris Elba), who intends to return to his ex-wife and son at all costs.close 100%

Flight Hijacked was created by George Kay and Jim Field Smith, authors of the international anthology Criminal (Kay also had a hand in Lupin). And that’s exactly what you’d expect from a “tense thriller about the voyage of a hijacked plane” signed by their names: that is, a tense thriller about the voyage of a hijacked aircraft. The action of the show unfolds as if in real time: seven episodes for a seven-hour flight with a breeze from Dubai to London (fortunately, everything goes in a slightly accelerated mode – every hour fits in 45-50 minutes, like in the legendary TV series “24 hours”) .

“Aircaught Flight” is probably not the most outstanding work in Elba’s career, who, even in “Luther”, reached the maximum heights in depicting terribly harsh men with nerves of steel, capable of solving, it seems, any issues. In the midst of the local mumblecore homage to the first two Die Hards, he just re-signs this skill of his. And along the way, he collects a playlist of the reference British trip-hop from his own filmography: for “Paradise Circus” by Massive Attack in the intro of “Luther” there is now an intro to “Lonely Soul” by Unkle (since the experience of DJing was not useful and did not take root on Netflix in the form of a series “Turn it up, Charlie,” let it be).close 100%

Still from Flight Hijacked (2023)Apple TV+

“Flight” is not very surprising from the point of view of the genre, but within the framework of this very genre it works perfectly: a series that once again tells about heroism on the ground, which seems to be supposed to save the system from wrong decisions, but change the system itself, as usual, not offering, constantly keeps in suspense and skillfully manages intrigue. The fate of the ill-fated Dubai-London flight remains vague until the last minutes, more than half of the distance of the show cunningly conceals who exactly arranged it all and why. This continues until the last episode – everything is turned upside down there, and “Jailed Over”, which previously followed the route of a good series, deviates from it in the direction of a very good one (here you need to joke something about the need to fasten seat belts).

It’s a pity that the show doesn’t have too many chances to provoke a stir. But everyone who watches it is unlikely to be disappointed, and “Flight” will be a successful continuation of the line of international thrillers showing through on Apple TV +, which so far consists of “Tehran” and “Communication”. The only thing worth advising here is that it’s better not to stretch this route for a month and a half and watch all seven episodes in one gulp. But, perhaps, not in the cabin – the worst choice in this case would be perhaps “Lost”.
