France cuts wine volumes due to drought and heat wave

    Published on

Due to drought and abnormal heat, French winemakers will lose volumes of wine this year, but not catastrophically. Amélie Petit, development manager of the French association of winemakers Vignerons Engagés, announced this on August 20.

“There are many climatic factors that have affected wine production since the beginning of 2022. These are, for example, frosts and hail, which led to a decrease in production volumes in various vineyards in France, and in summer there is still drought and intense heat, which will also affect the volumes of wine produced, ”she said “RIA News “.

Petit explained that when the vineyards began to bloom in France, there was little moisture, as the drought came quite early that year , and the heat wave further contributed to the evaporation of water in the vines.

According to her, the most affected regions in France, where wine is produced, were the Loire, Burgundy and Bordeaux.

“This year we expect 44 million hectoliters of wine, which is more than in 2021, as the spring frosts then hit the harvest hard in many regions, but less than we expected, – for example, 50 million hectoliters, as it was in 2020, ”said Petit.

She assured that the population would not lose any of the varieties of wine, just some of them would be presented in less x volumes. The representative of the association of winemakers hopes that the stocks in the cellars will be filled in 2022.

Earlier, on August 16, it was reported that the harvest of fruits and vegetables from French farmers this year decreased by almost % due to very dry weather. President of the French National Association of Vegetable Producers (Legumes de France) Jacques Rouchasset also added that the government needs to organize state support programs for farmers, because without them, France will be forced to import all fruits and vegetables from other countries.

Earlier, on August 12, forest fires in France near the city of Bordeaux, which began due to severe drought, were compared with the apocalypse. Fire brigades from six European countries were called in to fight the flames.

Last July was recognized as one of the six hottest in Europe on record. Temperature records have been broken in several countries.
