Anglo-French actress and singer Jane Birkin has died at the age of 77. The nurse found the body of a celebrity in her Parisian home. Not so long ago, Birkin canceled concerts for health reasons. The French media called her a national icon and “the most French of British actresses”.
Birkin’s career began in the “swinging sixties”. She performed her first film roles in the film “Blowup” by Michelangelo Antonioni and the comedy “Kaleidoscope”. A couple of years later, she met the French musician and singer Serge Gainsbourg, the couple began a stormy romance.
Together they released an album with several hits – for example, the scandalous “I love you … I don’t either.” The song was banned from radio stations in Europe due to its frivolous content.
In a relationship with Gainsbourg – they never got married – Birkin had a daughter, Charlotte, who also became a famous actress and singer.
After breaking up with the French bard, Jane Birkin continued to act in films and was a regular character in gossip columns. The iconic Hermes Birkin handbag was even named after her. In addition, she was awarded the Order of the British Empire and the French National Order, and in 2018 she received the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun.
Jane Birkin lived the rest of her life in Paris. In 2021, she suffered a stroke.
In addition to Charlotte, the actress had two more daughters – English photographer Kate Barry, who died in 2013, and French actress Lou Doillon. Birkin is survived by three grandchildren.
