    Ghana declares end of Marburg virus disease outbreak

    Accra, September 16 The Ministry of Health of Ghana announced on the 16th that the Marburg virus disease epidemic in the country has ended.

    Ghana’s Ministry of Health official Kuma-Abo Aje said at a press conference held on the same day that with the help and guidance of the World Health Organization and other institutions, Ghana has taken the whole country to take appropriate measures contained the spread of the epidemic.

    WHO Representative in Ghana, Casoro, said that despite the declared end of the epidemic, “we still need to strengthen surveillance, check response mechanisms, draw important lessons and strengthen our capacity to respond to health emergencies”.

    The Ministry of Health of Ghana announced on July 17 that it has confirmed the first outbreak of Marburg virus disease in the country. A total of 3 positive cases were found in this outbreak, of which 2 died and 1 recovered.

    According to WHO’s official website, Marburg virus disease is a severe viral hemorrhagic fever caused by Marburg virus, with an average mortality rate of about 50%. Marburg virus and Ebola virus are both filoviruses and are transmitted through physical contact and body fluid contact. Since its first discovery in 1967, there has been no vaccine or effective therapy against Marburg virus approved for use, but some immunotherapies and drugs are in development.
