The armed forces of the Russian Federation are conducting combat operations more effectively than at the beginning of the special operation, preventing the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) from achieving noticeable success in the counteroffensive. British political scientist Mark Galeotti wrote about this on July 8 in an article for The Times newspaper.
As the political scientist noted, the Armed Forces of Ukraine did not make a breakthrough in any of the directions, which speaks of the “unexpected persistence” of the Russian forces. According to him, the RF Armed Forces have demonstrated “the ability to learn from the past 16 months.”
He pointed out that the Russian military is coordinating their actions better and using artillery more effectively, actively using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for aerial reconnaissance. New weapons and modifications of old ones that have shown their effectiveness are also used.
Galeotti believes that Lancet UAVs, the latest Mining Systems Agriculture, as well as Ka-52 Alligator helicopters with the Vikhr anti-tank missile system (ATGM) capable of attacking positions of Ukrainian militants, remaining all the reach of the air defense systems (air defense) of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The political scientist stressed that the offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is still at the initial stage, they have at their disposal six more brigades equipped with Western weapons. In his opinion, this “gives them every chance to break through the Russian defenses.”Killer Tactics: AFU Trying to Hack Russian Defenses with Infantry Why Armed Forces Changed Their Tactics and How Long Can Attacks Last Without the Use of Armored Vehicles
Earlier in the day, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the AFU are facing counteroffensive failures on a daily basis.
On July 3, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that Ukrainian nationalists had not achieved their goals in any of the areas. According to him, the leadership of the militants, regardless of significant losses, at the insistence of Western curators, requires the command to continue the offensive.
Secretary of the Security Council Nikolai Patrushev reported to Russian President Vladimir Putin on June 22 that the losses of Ukrainian troops from June 4 to 21 exceeded 13 thousand people and 246 tanks, including 13 Western ones.
On June 16, at the plenary session of the SPIEF-2023, Putin announced the heavy losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine during the counteroffensive compared to the Russian army. At the moment, Ukrainian troops are trying to break through the positions of the Russian Federation on the Vremevsky ledge, however, according to him, they have no chance, as well as in other directions.
Prior to this, on June 14, a former Pentagon adviser, Colonel Douglas McGregor, said that the Armed Forces of Ukraine achieved nothing during the counteroffensive. In his opinion, the “achievements” of the offensive of the Ukrainian army described in the Ukrainian reports are far from the combat zone, and therefore have no value.
The special operation to protect Donbass, which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24 last year, continues. The decision was made against the background of the aggravation of the situation in the region due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
