    Japanese media: Japan's population has negative growth for 13 consecutive years, and the proportion of the elderly population hits a new high

    According to a report on the Kyodo News website on the 9th, according to the results of a population dynamics survey released by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan on August 9, as of January 1 this year, Japan’s total population was about 123 million, a decrease of nearly 620,000 year-on-year. Negative growth for 13 consecutive years. In addition, the proportion of Japanese people over the age of 65 increased to 29%, setting a new record since statistics began in 1994.

    It is reported that the survey results show that on January 1 this year, the total population of Japan decreased by 726,000 people compared with 2021, a decrease of 0.57%. Both the number and magnitude of reductions were the largest since comparable data became available in 2013.

    Japan’s population has grown negative for 13 consecutive years. The decline was mainly due to the fact that births fell to a record low of about 810,000, while deaths rose to a record high of about 1.44 million.

    According to the report, in terms of Japanese prefectures, the largest population decrease was Tokyo, with a decrease of 48,592 people.
