Lawyer warned of a new scheme of fraud through instant messengers

    Published on

Honored Lawyer of Russia Ivan Solovyov spoke about a new fraudulent scheme using instant messengers.

In an interview with the agency “Prime” on Thursday, October 6, the specialist explained that telephone scammers call on Viber or WhatsApp (owned by Meta Corporation, recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation) and pretend to be employees of the investigating authorities in an attempt to find out personal data.

Fraudsters scare their victims with “forgery of documents” and an attempt to steal their funds under the guise of the same last name.

“Quite it is clear that a person becomes interested in what kind of namesake is trying to encroach on his funds with the help of a fake power of attorney, while calling himself his relative, ”Soloviev explained.

At the next stage of the fraudulent scheme, the attacker reports that the suspect forged and presented to the bank a power of attorney allegedly on behalf of a citizen to withdraw cash and arrange loans.

He noted that after that, the scammers report the need to verify the victim’s personal data, which the perpetrator allegedly provided, with the true ones. Thus, the attackers are trying to find out the information they need, they are even offered to transfer money to a “safe account” for those who are especially frightened, notes the website aif.ru.

As a result, the victim loses money. In this regard, the lawyer urged to remember that law enforcement officers never call citizens in order to verify personal data and offer to take part in the investigation, reports the TV channel “360” .

On September 10, the press service of the Central Bank reported that telephone scammers began to use a new scheme to steal money, the attackers are asking the victim to help in the “investigation” of invented illegal actions of the Central Bank employees. Moreover, it is forbidden to inform relatives about this, writes NSN .

In February, lawyer Solovyov explained, what to do immediately after a call from a scammer. According to him, it is urgent to contact the bank and the police. He emphasized that it is the irresponsible behavior of the victims that contributes to the fact that the number of attackers is growing. He added that if you report a scammer, the financial institution will be able to develop a way to protect its customers, the TV channel

    Zvezda notes.

In December last year, the Ministry of Internal Affairs drew up a typical portrait of a telephone scammer: this is an unemployed Internet user 18 35 years old, male or female, with basic knowledge of using financial services, according to the website kp.ru.
