Matytsin commented on the possibility of Russian athletes participating in the Olympics

Russia is doing everything to ensure that its athletes are admitted to the Olympics, but it is too early to judge whether this problem will be solved. Such a statement was made on September 6 by the Minister of Sports of Russia Oleg Matytsin during the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF).

“We hope that Russian athletes will take part in the Olympic Games and, accordingly, to start – in qualifying rounds. And we do our best, our federations, representatives in international federations,” the minister said in an interview with RIA Novosti , noting that this is a difficult task, the probability of success of the decision of which has not yet been determined.

He also noted that without the Russian team, the Olympics will lose their content, and the unity of the Olympic movement will be undermined, since the removal of Russian athletes from the competition will violate the basic European principles.

On July 11, a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Craig Reedy, assessed the chances of Russian athletes participating in the Olympics as “unlikely”. An obstacle to participation in the 2024 Olympics for Russian athletes will be the lack of qualification, which starts two years before the Games. The exceptions are cycling, judo and tennis.

The Olympic Games will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024.

Previously, On July 6, the International Ski Federation (FIS) extended the suspension of skiing and snowboarding athletes from Russia and Belarus for the summer season. of 33 states supported the suspension of the membership of Russia and Belarus in international sports federations. Also, the heads of sports departments demanded to limit television broadcasts of international competitions in the Russian Federation and Belarus.

On June 19, the head of the IOC, Thomas Bach, said that the time had not yet come to revise the recommendations on the removal of Russian athletes.

Restrictions against Russian athletes were a response to the ongoing Russian operation to protect the Donbass, the beginning of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24. Moscow explained that its tasks include the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine. The decision was made against the backdrop of an aggravation of the situation in the region in mid-February due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
