Military expert Khodarenok explained why the “counterattack” of the Armed Forces of Ukraine does not bring results

    Published on

It seems that in Kyiv they seriously believed that after the first fire raids by Ukrainian artillery, the grey-footed Mordorians in the Zaporozhye direction would turn into a panic and disorderly flight. Sparkling with their heels, Russian units and units will wake up only after the meridian of Rostov-on-Don, it was thought in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

However, this did not happen in practice. The Ukrainian military violated almost all the classic conditions for launching a counterattack.

It is beneficial to apply them when the enemy (that is, the RF Armed Forces in this case), as a result of stubborn defense and counterattacks on him, has already suffered significant losses and is disorganized; his battle formations are upset; immediate reserves are used up, delayed or tied down.

As you know, a premature counterattack, when the enemy is not yet weakened (and the units and formations of the RF Armed Forces at this stage are not at all weakened), cannot lead to a decisive result. “Kyiv’s calculations did not materialize.” Why the counter-offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine did not start Over the past few days, the impression has been persistently that the offensive operation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine … 15 June 20:24

An important condition for conducting a successful counterattack (“counterattack” in the Ukrainian interpretation) is the secrecy of its preparation (and in Kiev information about the upcoming counterattack sounded from every iron), the suddenness of the application (there was no surprise), reliable fire damage to the enemy (and this was not carried out in full), as well as the implementation of measures to protect advancing and deploying troops from enemy air strikes (just these strikes against the Armed Forces of Ukraine are now carried out with enviable regularity). And the most important condition is the capture of superiority in the air (at least for a while and at least in the counterattack zone), and yet it is desirable to have an overall fire superiority over the enemy.

If these elementary conditions are not met, then success from a counterattack can not be expected. Most likely, the territorial acquisitions will be purely symbolic, and the losses will exceed all the most gloomy expectations (which, in fact, is noticeable as a result of two weeks of fighting in the Zaporozhye direction).

It is also difficult to cover one’s own troops from enemy air attacks only by the forces of anti-aircraft missile units, which the Armed Forces of Ukraine counted on. Here, like air, both aviation and combat helicopters are needed.

Let’s analyze only one particular case: for example, an armored unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is advancing to the line of transition to the attack. In this case, it can be covered by US-made M1097 Avenger self-propelled short-range air defense systems mounted on the chassis of an HMMWV-type off-road vehicle. The far boundary of the M1097 Avenger kill zone is 5.5 km.

The firing range of the modernized 9K121M Vikhr anti-tank missile system, which is equipped with Ka-52 Alligator combat helicopters, is 10 km (cases of firing at a long range were also noted).

Thus, the Alligator can successfully complete a combat mission without entering the M1097 Avenger kill zone. The Vikhr missile is a very formidable weapon in the fight against armored fighting vehicles of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and leaves them practically no chance of surviving. Thanks to the tandem warhead, the Whirlwind is capable of destroying any Western-style tank. The American publication 19FortyFive writes about this, in the material of which the Ka-52 Alligator helicopter was called a super-predator.

The heart of the Ka-52 “Alligator” (according to NATO classification “Hokum B”) is the Argument-2000 sighting-flight-navigation system. It includes: an on-board digital computer, a flight and navigation system, a round-the-clock surveillance and flight system, a round-the-clock search and sighting system, the Arbalet-52 radar complex, the Vitebsk airborne defense complex, and others. Arbalet-52, by the way, it is capable of tracking up to 20 targets. This radar “sees” a tank from 12 km, an aircraft from 15 km. The Ukrainian counteroffensive proved to be a test. In Kyiv, the details of the plan to advance the Armed Forces of Ukraine were revealed, they are testing, they have not yet switched to a counteroffensive, the adviser to the head of the presidential office said… 15 June 16:23

According to 19FortyFive, more than 20 Russian Ka-52 helicopters were additionally deployed to Berdyansk airport, which is located about 100 km from the front line.

It is very difficult in some cases to fight the Armed Forces of Ukraine against Ka-52 combat helicopters using only anti-aircraft missile units, especially those equipped with the M1097 Avenger. In this regard, systems such as “Shell” and “Tor” would have been more effective, but such weapons in the Ukrainian army, for obvious reasons, are not available as a class.

To gain air superiority, the Ukrainian armed forces need both F-16 multirole fighters and AH-64 attack helicopters. It is quite possible that such weapons will be supplied to the Ukrainian army in the foreseeable future. In the meantime, Russian Ka-52 helicopters continue to successfully destroy the armored vehicles of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, thereby making the success of the “counterattack” more and more illusory.

However, as Gazeta wrote earlier, it is still premature to draw any final conclusions on the results of the offensive operation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine at this stage. The situation is in development, the main forces of the Ukrainian army have not yet entered the battle, the situation can change dramatically at any time, and in any direction.
