Milliyet: Turkey plans to organize talks between Russia and the West on Ukraine

    Published on

Turkey plans to organize talks between Russia and the West over the conflict in Ukraine, writes a columnist for the Turkish newspaper Milliyet Ozay Shendir.

According to him, Ankara has studied all the public speeches of Russian President Vladimir military operation and concluded that Moscow wanted a “long-term deal with the West.” This, the author of the article points out, will help achieve peace between Russia and Ukraine.

According to the columnist, the corresponding proposal has already been transmitted to Washington through diplomatic channels.

“The first comments on the plan from influential figures in Washington are very positive. The only question is whether it will be possible to find a Russian interlocutor for such a dialogue,” Shendir said.

According to him, “Ankara also respects the will of Ukraine and has always used open channels to explain that war must return to peace without the use of tactical nuclear weapons.”

The journalist noted that during the European Political Community summit in Prague, Turkey “felt the positive effect” of being the only country that could negotiate with Russia and Ukraine.

“Do not be surprised if in the near future the West and Russia will sit down at the negotiating table thanks to Turkey” , — the columnist pointed out.

“The deal between Russia and the Western world”

Earlier, the official representative of the President of Turkey, Ibrahim Kalyn made the statement that Moscow, according to Ankara, is counting on “a new deal with the West” that would reflect modern realities.

“As far as we understand , Mr. Putin alone wants to make a big new deal, a new deal with the West. Part of this, no doubt, concerns Ukraine. – Kalyn said in an interview with CNN.

As a result, the entire “global liberal order” will face a serious test, said a representative of the Turkish president. According to him, Moscow believes that the agreements reached as a result of the Cold War no longer reflect the current situation in Russia. As such, they need to be revised.

He also expressed the opinion that the suspension of the negotiation process between Russia and Ukraine was predictable. At the same time “negotiations will probably resume at one point or another” , he believes.

“Question in when we will return to this and what damage will be done by that time, ”said the representative of the Turkish president.

Ankara, from the very beginning of hostilities in Ukraine, has been striving to be a mediator in resolving the conflict. On October 6, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that thanks to Turkey’s efforts in the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, an exchange of prisoners of war took place.

Peace negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv are no longer ongoing more than half a year. On October 4, the President of Ukraine put into effect the decision of the National Security and Defense Council on the impossibility of holding negotiations with Vladimir Putin. This happened after the ceremony of signing agreements on the admission of four new regions to Russia took place in the Kremlin.

Zelensky stressed that Kyiv would not conduct any negotiations with Moscow while Putin was president of the Russian Federation. He noted that Ukraine offered Russia “to agree on coexistence on equal, honest, decent and fair conditions,” but while Putin is in power, this is “impossible.”

“We will now wait for either a change in position the current president, or maybe we will wait for the future president of Ukraine, who will change his position in the interests of the Ukrainian people, ”commented the decision of Kyiv, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
