Minvod airport will be flooded with passengers // The new terminal will be built for 12 billion rubles.

    Published on

The construction of a new terminal at Minvod Airport, whose passenger traffic is growing rapidly, will be completed no earlier than 2025. Novaport plans to invest 12 billion rubles in the project. Experts note that the airport is in dire need of increasing capacity, taking into account the closure of air traffic with 11 other southern cities. But even if the restrictions are lifted, the Mineralnye Vody will still need to expand as the largest hub in the North Caucasus. should be completed by 2025, TASS reported with reference to the regional authorities. In 2019, Novaport expected to launch a new terminal with an area of more than 25 thousand square meters. m in 2023. The cost of construction was not disclosed at that time.

But, as Kommersant‘s sources in the market and in the expert community note, the terms now indicated are “moderately optimistic”, and if the holding meets them, “it will really a successful project given the turbulence of the market.” As Kommersant wrote on July 28, Novaport has already suspended the construction of a new Voronezh airport due to “logistical and sanctions difficulties” that have affected the range and delivery time of building materials and equipment. According to a Kommersant source, the project may rise in price by up to 20%.

The largest airport in the North Caucasus serves 34 domestic flights and 17 international ones (including those to Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Tashkent and Israel ). In 2021, the passenger traffic was 3.2 million people, the forecast for 2022 is 3.8 million people. The press service of the airport reported that in the first half of 2022, passenger traffic increased by 22% compared to almost 1.4 million in January-June 2021. At the same time, the number of regional destinations at the airport increased by more than a third from February to the beginning of summer.

The construction of new facilities in the Mineralnye Vody looks like a long overdue issue both in terms of space availability and in attracting modern airport technologies, notes the executive director of Aviaport, Oleg Panteleev. Modern airports represent a “fundamentally different” ratio of functional areas and the sector of non-aviation income – catering and leisure, which are represented “in a small amount” in the Minvody, he says: “However, many Russian airports have gone through these stages of development.”

The expert has no doubt that the demand for the expansion of the Minvod airport will not disappear after the opening of the southern airports (the last time the Federal Air Transport Agency extended the ban on flights to them until August 17). Part of the traffic can be pulled over by Gelendzhik, but in general, Minvod has no competitors due to its good location. “It can be stated that international travel to traditional European resorts in the foreseeable future will remain relevant for a very limited number of Russians, and the resort destinations of the Russian Federation will retain their passenger,” he says, adding that Minvody does not compete with Turkey and its predominantly beach vacation. Mineralnye Vody maintain stable winter traffic, so the demand for it will grow.”

The current level of passenger traffic in the country as a whole is largely due to a large-scale program to subsidize transportation until October. But, probably, in one form or another, state assistance will be provided to the aviation industry in the next few years, Oleg Panteleev believes. While “some aircraft will definitely leave the fleet” in 2023-24, even with a likely shortage of capacity, carriers will prefer to put them as much as possible on popular resort destinations, he says.

In this regard, the growth the largest airport in the south, Sochi, can wait for loading in the coming years. According to the announced plans of Aerodynamics, the new terminal for 11 billion rubles. will appear there no earlier than 2027. The press service of the Kommersant holding reported that more than 6.5 million passengers were served from January to July, which is 2% more than in the seven months of 2021 (11 million for the entire 2021). The holding has not yet decided whether they will increase the existing terminal or build a new one.

pandemic amid restrictions on international flights,” Oleg Panteleev believes: “There is a shortage of boarding chairs inside the terminal, the check-in sector is overloaded during the peak season.” Therefore, the expert believes, even if the dynamics of traffic growth in Sochi slows down, this will not remove the relevance of the new project.
