“ I must go to the Great Wall. I can’t see it, but I can feel it. I want to touch those majestic bricks with my hands.” In December 1981, Argentine literary giant Borges received the visiting Chinese diplomat Huang Zhiliang at his home If so.

Borges, who was 82 years old at the time, was blind. A few days before he made this remark, he also published a poem in the local newspaper titled “Painted Cane” about his Chinese feelings.

A lacquered walking stick from China accompanied Borges through his final years. Borges has said many times that he is looking forward to one day to travel to China with this cane in person.

In “The Lacquer Cane”, Borges started from a cane and imagined a distant and magical country, which also mentioned such as Zhuang Zhou Mengdie, sixty-four hexagrams and other traditional Chinese cultural elements.

“Borges’ creation is influenced by traditional Chinese culture.” Mercedes Giuffre, a professor of history at the National University of Mar del Plata in Argentina, recently accepted a reporter from Xinhua News Agency said in a video interview.

Giuffre said: “There are many Chinese elements in Borges’ short story masterpiece “The Garden of Forking Paths”. Except the protagonist is Chinese, the story It also unfolds in a Chinese garden with ‘forking paths’.” In Giuffre’s view, China‘s thousands of years of culture fascinated Borges.

Borges also contributed to the introduction of Chinese culture. He edited the Spanish version of “Strange Selections from Liaozhai”, wrote comments in local media praising “A Dream of Red Mansions” as “the most famous novel in the history of Chinese literature”, wrote the preface to the Spanish version of “Book of Changes”, and also wrote “Book of Songs” Some of the works were translated into Spanish.

“There is no doubt that Borges played an important role in the dissemination of traditional Chinese literature in the Spanish-speaking world.” Lu, Professor of Literature at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina Wen Posse told Xinhua News Agency a few days ago: “As far as I know, many readers from Spanish-speaking countries first learned about the Book of Changes, Tao Te Ching, Dream of Red Mansions and the traditional Chinese philosophical thoughts contained in them by reading blogs. Borges’ works.”

In the 1980s, Borges’ short stories were translated into Chinese and published in various literary journals. Up to now, there are more than 80 Chinese translations of Borges’ works.

“Borges has a great influence on contemporary Chinese writers.” Lou Lou, an assistant researcher at the Latin American Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and an honorary member of the Argentine Writers Association, said in an interview with reporters recently.

“I have told many people that I also dream of going to China…” In that meeting with Huang Zhiliang more than 40 years ago, Borges made no secret of it Excited and eager.

Although he failed to knock the steps of the Great Wall with his beloved lacquer cane, Borges, who was influenced by traditional Chinese culture, still influenced many Chinese writers and readers with his words. “It’s a wonderful thing that the connection between China and Borges exists in the world of literature,” Lou said.
