    Presidents of Ukraine and South Korea will meet for the first time at the G7 summit

    South Korean President Yoon Seok Yeol and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet for the first time on Sunday, May 21, in Hiroshima at the G7 summit, Yonhap reported, citing the office of the South Korean leader.

    The meeting will take place a day after Zelensky arrived in the city to rally international support, and days after President Yun met with the wife of the Ukrainian leader, Olena Zelenskaya, in Seoul.

    South Korea sent humanitarian aid to Ukraine but rejected Kyiv’s requests for lethal weapons. During the meeting with Mr. Yun, Zelenska asked for additional assistance in areas where South Korea is able to do so.     In response, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that potential arms supplies to Kyiv by Seoul would indirectly mean involvement in the conflict.

    On March 3, South Korean Prime Minister Han Dok-soo said that Seoul is not yet ready to send weapons to Kyiv. He also stressed that in 2023 the Republic of Korea plans to provide humanitarian assistance to Ukraine for $130 million. Until then, South Korea has provided humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, as well as military items such as helmets, but not weapons.Share:
