Pressure drops sharply in one of Nord Stream 2 lines

    Published on

The pressure on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline dropped sharply on the night of September 26, DPA reported, citing data from the pipeline operator.

According to Reuters, the pressure dropped overnight from 105 to 7 bar.

The agency notes that the operator immediately alerted “the responsible departments in Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Russia“. An investigation is currently “underway”, but the cause of the accident has not yet been established.

The German Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Protection also said that it did not know the cause that led to the pressure drop in the gas pipeline. “We are in contact with the relevant departments in order to find out the reasons …” – noted in the department.

According to the representative of Nord Stream 2 AG Ulrich Lissek, “in some that place” along the gas pipeline, “a hole probably appeared” .

He also did not rule out that the leak occurs “on the land section” of the pipeline. A company spokesman said that under normal conditions, the pressure inside the gas pipeline “is 105 bar”, but now on the German section it is “only 7 bar”. sanctions regime and lack of personnel on the ground.”

    Possible leak site

Danish Maritime Authority recorded a gas leak near the island of Bornholm. According to the agency, the alleged point of emergency is located just outside the territorial waters of Denmark, in the exclusive economic zone. The location of the leak corresponds to the Nord Stream 2 route.

The Maritime Administration warned that the leak could be dangerous for navigation. Therefore, the agency advises ships to bypass the emergency area five miles away.

Responding to a question about the alleged location of the leak, a Nord Stream 2 spokesman told Reuters that the leak could not have occurred at the end point of the gas pipeline in Lubmin in northern Germany .

“If it were in Lubmin, you would have heard it,” he said.

    Talk about launching SP-2

Against the backdrop of a complete halt in gas pumping through Nord Stream in Europe, proposals were made to allow the launch of Nord Stream 2.

At the same time, German Energy Minister Robert Habeck has repeatedly said that the possibility of launching the pipeline is ruled out. He pointed out that such a decision would increase Europe’s dependence on Russian gas and would be “raising the white flag” in opposition to all the sanctions imposed on Russia.

On September 19, the Prime Minister of the federal state of Lower Saxony in Germany, Stefan Weil, said that Nord Stream 2 may never be put into operation, since Berlin has lost confidence in Moscow in the energy sector. He also expressed the opinion that further partnership between Russia and Germany in the field of energy is impossible.

So the politician commented on the words of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who on September 16 suggested that European countries lift sanctions from Nord Stream 2.

The gas pipeline consists of two pipelines about 1200 km long, which pass through the exclusive economic zones and territorial waters of five countries: Russia, Germany, Finland, Denmark and Sweden. The combined capacity of the two lines of Nord Stream 2 is 55 billion cubic meters. m of gas per year. At the moment they are filled with gas and ready to go.
