Russia condemns invitation to UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine of eight EU and NATO countries

    Published on

Russia expressed its disagreement with the UK’s sole invitation to the meeting of the UN Security Council (SC) on Ukraine eight countries of the European Union (EU) and NATO. This was announced on July 17 by Dmitry Polyansky, First Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the World Organization.

“Before you adopt the agenda, I would like to express my fundamental disagreement with the Chairmanship’s approach to inviting Rule 37 delegations to today’s meeting. Contrary to established practice, the British Chairmanship has single-handedly decided to give the floor to eight EU and NATO member states and their closest allies, as well as the representative of the European Union itself,” Polyansky said during the meeting.

He noted that “according to established practice, no more than three countries participate in the meeting on Ukraine under rule 37.” According to him, the participation of representatives of the EU and NATO countries will not bring added value to the discussion, which will only “drag out, turning into a debate.”

According to Polyansky, the British approach “testifies to the unscrupulousness of the chairmanship” and is an attempt to put pressure on the members of the UN Security Council.

“There are no reasonable explanations for the need to turn the meeting of the Security Council into a NATO cabal, and there cannot be,” the diplomat added.

The day before, Polyansky said that the Security Council will hold a meeting on Ukraine on July 17 with the participation of the heads of diplomatic departments.

On June 29, Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasyl Nebenzya said that Russia had circulated a letter to the UN Security Council urging the West to Kiev not to carry out acts of sabotage at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP).

Prior to that, on June 23, Nebenzya at a meeting of the UN Security Council said that the counteroffensive undertaken by Ukraine is suicidal for the country. He noted that it had already cost tens of thousands of mobilized, several hundred destroyed pieces of equipment and in Ukrainian society is called nothing more than “Zaporozhye meat grinder.”Share:
