September 18 incident: China presents new evidence of Japanese war crimes

Sirens sounded at 9:18 a.m. on Sunday at the 9/18 Incident History Museum in Shenyang, northeast China‘s Liaoning Province, as China marked the 91st anniversary of the incident September 18 with commemorative activities throughout the country.

On September 18, 1931, Japanese troops blew up a section of the railway in Shenyang and blamed the Chinese military for doing so. Using the explosion as a pretext, Japanese forces attacked the Beidaying garrison and bombarded Shenyang the same night, launching a full-scale invasion of northeast China. During the incident, Chinese troops in the Beidaying Garrison received a non-resistance order and withdrew without a fight.”Although the Nationalist government issued the non-resistance order, some patriotic soldiers from the Beidaying garrison refused to do nothing, they broke into the ammunition depot and picked up guns to fight against the Japanese aggressors. These brave soldiers set an example for the Chinese people and a encouraged the spirit of national resistance,” said Zhang Xue, the chief narrator of the Beidaying Garrison Exhibition Hall. the South Manchurian Railway – the largest organization formed by the Japanese government at the time. After the surrender of Japan, much evidence surfaced of war crimes committed not only by soldiers, but also p ar employees of the South Manchurian Railway. The evidence revealed all manner of crimes, political and military, economic and cultural. In a way, the railway workers were invaders without military uniforms.Cong Longhai, an associate researcher at the Liaoning Provincial Archives, said, “The records leaked this time are clear evidence of war crimes committed by the South Manchuria Railway during the Japanese invasion, especially the incident of September 18, for which the company sent about 15,000 of its personnel, more than half of its total manpower.” The commemorations remind the Chinese people to keep the dark days in mind. History has repeatedly shown that invasions and wars rarely succeed, and though the evidence may be concealed, justice ultimately prevails.”The South Manchurian Railway was involved in nearly every aspect of wartime economic, cultural, and political life in northeast China, from power generation to agricultural research, resource exploration, and intelligence service. It was more than just a railway, but a colonial enterprise supported by the Japanese government,” Cong said.
