At the moment, Sweden would not want to join NATO because of the fears associated with the confrontation between the alliance and Russia. In addition, membership in the organization implies additional responsibilities and financial burden on the country. Political analyst Alexander Asafov stated this in a conversation with Lenta.ru.
“The fact is that now we are seeing an increase in rates on both sides. There is a possibility that agreements will be reached on Sweden’s entry into NATO, but the Turks are also raising the stakes, and Sweden, approving actions with the burning of the Koran, ”the analyst believes. According to him, the country’s unwillingness to join the alliance is obvious at the moment: the risks for the country are multiplying, taking into account the confrontation between NATO and Russia. “Membership in NATO also implies new responsibilities, additional financial burden. Obviously, at least part of the country’s political elite would be happy if the entry did not take place. Better – through the fault of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan,” Asafov concluded. On June 28, the Swedish police allowed a protest action with the burning of the Koran near the main mosque in Stockholm on the first day of the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha. The Turkish Foreign Ministry assessed Sweden’s chances of joining NATO as low. It is assumed that Ankara, despite external pressure, will “adhere to its principled position” because of the policy of Stockholm.
