    Thai parliament to discuss gun control

    Beijing, October 10. After a serious shooting at a nursery center in Thailand, the lower house of the Thai parliament will meet to discuss gun control and introduce specific control measures.

    The Deputy Chairman of the Police Affairs Committee of the House of Commons, Chipa Jidakorn, told Thailand’s PBS TV on the 8th that the Police Affairs Committee will meet to discuss increasing the difficulty of obtaining legal guns and requiring gun owners to every two Renew your gun license every three years.

    At least 24 children and 12 adults were killed in a shooting incident at a nursery center in Nong Mo Lampu province, northeastern Thailand on the 6th. According to local media reports, the gunman, a former police officer, killed his wife and children at his residence after committing the crime, and then committed suicide.

    Chipa went to the police station where the childcare center is located on the 8th. She said the House of Commons session would explore gun control and short- and long-term measures to tackle gun violence.

    According to a 2017 study by the Geneva-based research institute Small Arms Survey, there were more than 10.34 million privately owned firearms in Thailand that year, equivalent to 100 civilians owning more than 10.34 million firearms. 15 guns; more than 4.12 million of them were unregistered. Chipa said the figures were shocking.

    “It’s time for the parties involved to sit down and talk about the issues,” Chipa said, adding that serious discussion is needed on gun purchase and possession, knowledge about it, and penalties for illegal possession of firearms. (Lin Shuting)
