    The doctor called the reasons for gaining excess weight with a healthy lifestyle

    PhD, endocrinologist of the OMC Group of Companies Olga Nechaeva told Izvestiya why a person can gain excess weight, even leading a healthy lifestyle.

    According to her, a person’s weight depends on how many calories he receives and how much energy he spends.

    “Often a person can gain weight, even if leads a healthy lifestyle. Firstly, because the concept of healthy lifestyle is different for everyone. Secondly, because a particular person, even subject to the postulates of a healthy lifestyle, can spend fewer calories than he consumes. At the same time, he will not overeat, will adhere to moderate physical activity, will avoid very high-calorie foods, and so on. The fact is that specifically for his body, the balance between incoming and outgoing energy is not observed, ”Nechaeva explained.

    The largest energy consumption (about 60%) falls on maintaining the body – this is the so-called basal (or main) metabolism, which ensures the functioning of internal organs, metabolic processes in cells, respiration. About 30% more is spent during physical exertion, about 10% goes to digestion of food and a very small part – to maintain body temperature. Energy is also used to maintain muscle and fat mass. In addition, the temperature of food consumed also affects the amount of energy consumed – the higher it is, the lower the consumption.

Daria Rusakova told Izvestia about the implicit causes of obesity. According to her, in most cases, being overweight is the wrong eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle. However, another cause may be hypothyroidism – a disease associated with a decrease in thyroid function, and tumors of the pituitary gland. In addition, obesity is characteristic of Itsenko-Cushing’s disease, in which the work of the adrenal cortex is disrupted.
