The Russian Embassy in the United States demanded that the State Department issue a visa to Lavrov to speak at the UN General Assembly

On August 18, Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov will visit the State Department. He stressed that the issue of visas to members of the Russian delegation to the UN General Assembly will be the main topic of conversation with American diplomats. The event will take place from 20 to 26 September. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was appointed head of the delegation.

“The Embassy has already applied to the White House, the State Department with a demand to fulfill the obligations of the country on whose territory the UN headquarters is based, and to immediately issue visas to the minister and all members of the Russian delegation,” Antonov said on the air of the Russia-24 TV channel.

“Therefore, we can say with confidence that many would like to see Sergey Viktorovich the UN General Assembly. Let me remind you of the minister’s recent trips to Asia and Africa: they were waiting for him there, asking for a meeting,” the Russian ambassador to the United States added.

In response to this statement, the international organization announced that they would continue to assist in the extradition

“We are always working to facilitate the issuance of visas to all those who need to attend UN events, and we will continue to do so,” Deputy the official representative of the UN Secretary General Farhan Haq.

At the end of February of this year, Washington banned him from entering the United States as part of the sanctions against the Russian minister. In addition, the restrictions involve the freezing of assets in the United States, and also prohibit doing business with those on the “black list”. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that sanctions against Lavrov are illegitimate, and the minister does not have bank accounts in other countries.

In addition, the US authorities do not have the right to interfere with representatives and officials of UN member states if want to come to the events of the organization. The corresponding agreement was concluded between the United Nations and the United States as the host country of the headquarters in 1947.

But in practice, US diplomatic services do not issue visas to all delegates of UN countries. The Federation Council of Russia believes that another refusal to enter the United States will not come as a surprise to Moscow. This opinion was expressed in a conversation with Izvestia by Senator Grigory Krasin, who was part of the Russian delegation to the UN General Assembly:

Another member of the delegation, State Duma deputy Leonid Slutsky – believes that the risk of non-issuance of visas is “considerable”, and Senator Konstantin Kosachev is completely sure that it is not worth relying on US obligations, since “the Americans have shown themselves not only in this situation, but also in many others as a party unpredictable in their actions ”.

The issue of issuing visas to Russian delegates to the UN General Assembly was raised at the beginning of the month. On August 5, Lavrov said that he had previously sent a letter to UN Secretary General António Guterres about US failure to comply with its obligations as the host country of the UN headquarters. According to him, Guterres is obliged to seek from the American side that “it behaves decently.”

On the same day it became known that the UN Secretary General had already discussed with Lavrov and US Permanent Representative to the UN Linda Thomas- Greenfield this problem. The official representative of Guterres, Stefan Dujarric, told RIA Novosti that the UN representatives “maintain close contacts with the host country and the relevant missions at the UN, including the Russian Federation.”

that under US law, visa matters are confidential. At the same time, the American side recognizes its obligations under the agreement with the UN and “takes them seriously.”
