The Russians decided to compensate for data leaks

    Published on

The Ministry of Digital Development of Russia, together with large IT companies, is considering the possibility of creating a material compensation fund for citizens affected by leaks of personal databases. This was announced by Kommersant, citing two sources close to the dialogue and an informant in a large Russian IT organization.

To compensate the Russians for leaks data, the department decided to allocate funds from turnover fines, which the companies themselves will have to close. The Ministry of Digital Development stressed that they are now considering a mechanism for making payments. “It is necessary to determine how the volume will be calculated, under what conditions it will be possible to qualify for payments, other details,” the department noted. The initiative involves amending the Code of Administrative Offenses, according to which the company can be fined 1 percent of the annual turnover. The amount of the payment will rise to three percent if the organization sought to cover up the incident. Since the beginning of spring, leaks have occurred in companies such as Rostelecom, CDEK, Yandex.Food, Delivery Club and others.

Experts supported the idea of the Ministry of Digital Development. Roman Karpov, the head of the information security committee of the ARPP “Domestic Soft”, called the initiative of the department reasonable. In his opinion, “such a self-regulating system can increase the maturity of companies in terms of organizing information security.” SearchInform GR Director Olga Minaeva added that “creating a fund is a step forward in any case.”
