Chinese Special Representative for Eurasian Affairs Li Hui, who visited Kyiv in mid-May, did not believe that US Patriot missile defense systems could shoot down Russia‘s Kinzhal hypersonic missiles. On Wednesday, July 5, Minister of Defense of Ukraine Oleksiy Reznikov said in an interview with the Financial Times.

According to the publication, citing Ukrainian diplomats, Li Hui did not believe that the Patriot had intercepted the Kinzhal.

“I suggested to [him] that if there is any doubt, we are ready to provide evidence,” the head of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said, commenting on his negotiations with the Chinese special representative in May. According to Reznikov, Li Hui left Kyiv without “reading the evidence.”

According to the FT, the Ukrainian defense minister was meeting with US officials when President Volodymyr Zelensky called him.

Addressing his American visitors, Reznikov said: “I have good news for you. We shot down the “Dagger”.

The Kinzhal was allegedly a formidable Russian hypersonic missile that [Russian President] Vladimir Putin boasted was so fast it could not be intercepted. But on that May day, Ukrainian forces launched the newly acquired Patriot system, one of the most advanced weapons the US has supplied, proving Putin wrong. Military operation in Ukraine. “Ukrainian authorities regularly call on the West to provide Kyiv with air defense systems. Two batteries of Patriot anti-missile defense systems have now been transferred to Ukraine, and five batteries have been promised to Kyiv in total,” TASS notes.

At the same time, in early June, Zelensky said that Kyiv needed 50 Patriot systems.

Recall that at the end of May, Chinese Special Representative Li Hui called for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and the preservation of new regions within the Russian Federation.

According to The Wall Street Journal, a diplomat sent to Europe to promote Beijing’s peace plan to resolve the Ukraine conflict then delivered a clear message:

“US allies in Europe must defend their autonomy and demand an immediate ceasefire, leaving Russia the territories it currently occupies.”

According to the interlocutors of the publication, Li Hui suggested that Europe consider China as an economic alternative to the United States and stressed the need to act quickly to end the Ukrainian conflict and prevent its spread.

European officials indicated that they did not support freezing the conflict, and told the PRC representative that “it is impossible to separate Europe from America, and that Europe will not refuse to support Ukraine.”
