Vladimir Zelensky explained why he did not warn the Ukrainians about the special operation

    Published on

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that he did not respond to US warnings about the start of a Russian special operation for fear of provoking panic among the population and thereby “destroying the country.”

“If we this was reported, then I would have been losing $7 billion a month since October of last year, and by the time the Russians attacked, they would have captured us in three days. If this happened, then in October – God forbid, during the heating season – there would be nothing left. We would not be able to get out of this situation, and there would be chaos in the country, ”he explained in an interview with The Washington Post.

“In general, our inner feeling was correct: if we sow chaos among the people before the invasion, the Russians will devour us. Because during the chaos, people flee the country,” he added.

According to the Ukrainian leader, by February 24, Ukraine was “as strong as it could be.” Some of the inhabitants left the country, but “the majority remained here, they fought for their homes.”

began to evacuate, the politician assured.

When asked by a WP journalist about whether he personally believed that “a full-scale war is coming,” the president replied: “Listen, how can you believe it? That they will torment people and what is their purpose? Nobody believed that it would be so. And nobody knew it. And now everyone says we warned you. You warned in general terms. When we said, give us specifics – where they will come from, how many people and so on – everyone had as much information as we do. ”

Zelensky said that throughout December, January and February, citizens of Ukraine were actively withdrawing money from the state’s economy. “We could be strict in this regard, but we did not allow the National Bank or anyone else to limit the ability of people to withdraw their money. Although we were well aware that this would affect the country’s economy,” he said.

    Weapons, not signals

Zelensky, in an interview with WP, recalled that immediately after the start of the special operation he asked Western countries to close the airspace, but this was never done.

“So, as you may remember, ever since the full-scale invasion began, and until now, all I asked for was to close the sky, because if the sky were closed, we would not have all these deaths, ” he said.

The politician also pointed out that Western countries began to send weapons to Ukraine after the start of the special operation, although they knew that it was being prepared. “The minimum that we have had since 2014, in my opinion, is not enough. Serious weapons that we needed, like HIMARS or, say, 155-millimeter artillery – I’m not talking about tanks and aircraft – we didn’t have any of that and didn’t have the opportunity to buy it. The only thing we agreed on was military drones, Bayraktars and so on. But with all due respect, you can’t fight drones,” he emphasized.

“Everyone was afraid of the war. Nobody wants to fight with Russia. Look, no one wants to fight Russia. Everyone wants Ukraine to win, but no one wants to fight Russia. That’s all. But the war will go further, deeper into Europe, so please send us weapons, because we are also protecting you. And they started sending,” Zelensky summed up.

    to crush with tanks ”

Advisor to the Office of the President of Ukraine Oleksiy Arestovich said back in April that Zelensky knew in advance about the impending attack and did not warn the population so as not to provoke a mass evacuation.

“An exodus of refugees would begin. They could clog all the roads and prevent the transfer of our troops. We would have to crush and shoot Ukrainians with tanks. There would be such chaos that would not allow the transfer of troops. Therefore, Zelensky said that Russia would not attack, ”Arestovich noted then.

According to data of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the number of people who left Ukraine after February 24 has already exceeded 10.88 million people. Almost 2 million Ukrainians are in Russia, 6.38 million in European countries (most in Poland – 1.2 million). Departure of males of military age from 18 to 60 years is limited, so 90% of refugees are women and children.
