While the whole of Italy is suffering from a severe drought, visitors to Rome are surprised to see that the city’s traditional fountains and “big noses” continue to provide an endless supply of fresh water, according to Efe.

Reports say that in any corner of Rome, visitors can find traditional “big nose” cast-iron fountains with curved taps resembling an eagle The shape of the hook nose, from which the clean water flows continuously. The first 20 “big nose” fountains were installed in the city in 1874 by Luigi Pianciani, the first mayor of Rome after the reunification of Italy, and there are now about 2,800 installations throughout the province of Rome.

“The main function of the ‘big nose’ is to ventilate the ducts to reduce its own pressure and avoid network interruptions.” Writer Fabrizio Di Mauro explained in his book The Big Nose of Rome. In addition, a constant flow of water is fundamental to everything including health, as a constant flow of water prevents bacteria from multiplying.

It is reported that in the face of the current drought that is also severely affecting Rome, Ornella Senini, a member of the city council’s infrastructure committee, recently stated: On the one hand, it is true that the loss of water should be limited, but on the other hand, drinking water sources are also very important, and closing these fountains will not solve the problem.”

The report stated that , In addition to quenching thirst and refreshing, Rome’s fountains are also one of its tourist features, because in the center of the historic district, there are 200 “big noses” and 90 artistic fountains, from which drinking water is always poured.
