Special Assistant to the President of the United States, Senior Director for China at the White House National Security Council Laura Rosenberger commented on Washington’s plans to supply Taiwan with a large shipment of weapons, the total amount of which exceeds a billion dollars. According to her, this need is caused by the threat emanating from Beijing, according to Reuters.
“As [China] continues to increase pressure on Taiwan, we provide Taiwan has everything it needs to maintain its ability to defend itself,” the US administration official said.
She also added that the possible deal reflects the US assessment of the degree of threat posed by China.
Earlier, Liu Pengyu, spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington, estimated US intentions to supply Taiwan with arms worth $1.1 billion. According to him, this decision seriously threatens Beijing’s future relations with Washington.
